Recasting. opinions?

Posted by LewToons - July 20th, 2011

An actor from my series EFZ, hasnt contacted me back for quite a long time(nor a "yes" or a "no" just no response) and it is holding up the production at this point of the first episode - I have set out to work with a cast of TEN voice actors which i find very exciting and i understand the waiting is part of it.

so now i am torn about how to react - i was hoping for some response from some other animators who have a lot of experience with voice actors.

I feel awful recasting but i guess my question is, how long do you guys wait with no response before recasting? two months...three..?

I completely realize that Actors need ample time to record the lines - but that's not what i'm talking about here - i'm just talking about hearing back at all - just basic confirmation of involvement in the project

do you recast at all? - i don't want to harass anyone with messages either...

(i recall someone having a question about this kind of etiquette with handling actors and such but i cant recall who it was)

So any tips or bits of experience would be appreciated having to do with recasting or waiting on lines! thanks - i'm truly 50 - 50 at this point

i think you should give a weeks notice saying if he dosent respond soon you'll have to recast. And not to be a dick but if you need another voice i can help lol =D

Best of luck

thanks man - ill check out your SHIZZ *edit* nvm you dont really have any haha

I'd probably recast. If they aren't even responding that kind of shows they either aren't interested anymore or are very inactive. Either case, it'd probably be better to seek more reliable help than just wait.

good insight

yeeeaaah lol havent been in much but im preetty awesome in ma opinion lolz

haha feel free to pm me your stuff

There's nothing worse than an MIA VA! Someone ought to set up some kind of guild so that these people can be regulated.

I've had to deal with this before. About two years ago, before anyone on Newgrounds really knew me, I was desperately trying to find good VAs. Then, once the full cast was together, half actually recorded their lines and the other half didn't. After about 2 months of scrambling for VAs I finally lost interest and threw in the towel, which really sucked for the first half who actually did the job!

But hey, you're Red Harvest. You'll probably get offers from at least 10 other VAs requesting to fill this role after reading this newspost. I would tell the guy that he is on notice and set a deadline for when he needs to give you his lines. If he isn't even responding to your PM's, that isn't cool.

haha "so that these people can be regulated" - - to be honest, im just thankful that anyone wants to participate in my toons and im really thankful to have some of the cast members that signed on- so i feel more shitty being cutthroat about it...but thanks for weighing in, i figured many animators had been in this position before

I don't have the experience with VAs, but I agree wholeheartedly with Budge007's response. There's a communication problem here which you just don't need.

If you're concerned with etiquette, send an apologetic message, explain your decison, then move on.

hmm , gives me lots to think about!- thanks so much for replying - it means alot coming from an artist i respect so much -granted you dont work with voice actors but all the same i value your opinions -

All that attachment you have to the actors you picked, throw it out the window, it's NOT worth it.

There'd have been 2 new Necropolis movies between now and last summer if I hadn't placed unnecessary value on the actors' importance in my movies and just kept working. I spent months waiting for pretentious ass voice actors to give me even a second response (usually some dumb excuse like "I don't have 10 minutes to record these 3 or 4 lines) let alone the lines themselves.

The worst thing about it is, if they don't want to work with you they won't just say it. They'll tell you they're on board with your project, but won't respond or say shit to you, or make excuses for months on end. This is YOUR project not theirs. If it takes more than a month, drop em like they aren't shit and keep animating, it's a waste of time chasing them. Trying to keep up with a group of pompous assholes is part of the reason I dropped large OAV-ish projects until I have the pockets to hang money over their heads.

the thing is - i would much rather them just say "hey man - i cant work on this thing, good luck" - than just ignore me....oh well, thanks for the advice , i think the decision is becoming clear

I have experience on both ends. I don't animate, but I have created a series. When a VA doesn't even say, "Hey, I'm here. Sorry for the delay", it's a bit disrespectful and slows down EVERYTHING.

As a VA, there's been 1 or maybe 2 times where I couldn't do my lines for whatever reason, but I at least let the animator know ASAP.

Overall, I'd say try one last time and give the VA a specific date to respond by. If they don't... find someone else. If you do (shameless self-plug) I'm available!

Good luck!

ill check our your stuff man - thanks for poppin by

If you still need a VA I could audition for you. What character needs a voice?

i dont want to mention just yet who it is or what part needs filling - but i will keep you in mind should things flesh out

Is it giant juicy kick balls? Because he's dead.

if thats true then, that's absolutely horrible - he was one talented guy

Make the character mute. Or make all of his dialog appear in text boxes. Gamers will love it.

Nah really, go ahead and find someone else. If I didn't respond to someone for a while because I was physically unable to, I would EXPECT the part to go to someone else. Plus, there's the chance he's deliberately doing it. That's not guaranteed, but it is indeed possible.

If he ever DOES contact you later down the line and he's like "Dude, where's my part?", just go ahead and tell him the truth, you were uncertain if you'd ever hear from him again, but the show must go on. Then tell him that if any future parts come up, you'd be glad to send it his way.

But the longer you drag this out, the more awkward it's going to be when he finally does get around to talking to you. This stuff is like a bandaid. That's why as soon as I'm sure I don't want to be in a project for one reason or another, I just tell them I'm dropping out.

"whos that guy" - - "its HOTENKU the mute...his powers are...UNSTOPPABLE!!!"

When the voice actor is superb, all this is especially sad

this one is : (

Voice Actors should be able to do multiple voices so you should try to cut back on the amount or you will never finish.. seriously you just won't

you're right man - i got way to over zealous with this haha - hopefully it pays off

Two weeks is more than enough time for a voice actor to at least get back to you. If you don't hear from them for that long, it's their loss, and frankly they don't deserver the role.

Just my opinion on the subject.

Ronald Grundeswald is probably one of the greatest voice actors ever but he has shakespearian training.

I'll voice act for you if you'd like.
