My advice... stop working with archer =) lol
I think i get what you want.....but yeah that's a job for a mask, i suppose you could try a shape tween but i dont think it will work how you want it for a circular motion like that.
Alternatively if you definitely dont want to mask it you could tween the whole clocks color down to something else for the same visual meaning.
Umm, make one layer underneath the hand that is filled with whatever colors you want.
Then make the hand 100% transparent.
The hand against the blue background should be one movie clip and one layer, so that the hand is actually a hole in the blue layer movie clip.
This will allow the hand to move, showing every color underneath it.
but wont that still only show whats directly underneath it and not reveal the lower color as it passes -
Nah, I just did it in flash lol. Want a fla?

Thats an obviously crappy example. but by simply creating a one layered movie clip with a hole in it and tweening that movie clip to rotate over a background of color, the hole looks like it is changing colors.
i appreciate the help - but i think i probly explained it badly - - i need the spinning hand to actually leave behind all the area that it passes - like after the hand passes some space it uncovers the lower layer and just leaves that space.

THAR YA ARE
ah nice - thats a good idea!
If you need it to look good, frame-by-frame works beautifully if you put enough time into it. Besides, if you ever needed to work on drawing hands, now's your opportunity. "There are no short-cuts" is what I'm implying.
my worst fear haha
Example create a symbol with 3 layers draw a red circle on bottom layer copy the frame onto a middle layer and change the circle color to background color. Cut in half and move half new circle into top layer motiontween top layer 180 degrees. Post in flash right side up then paste a horizontal flipped version of the circle on top then just tween the hand in the layer above
I hope that made sense but it probably didn't. oh you wanted a box so you might just mask it with a box
Screw text explanations look at this fla http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/1 2f70fda359f9583795486918b52ee48
ahh nice solution!
asking for help in flash? i think you're on the wrong website.
buncha noobs here
the only way I could imagine this done without a mask is to make the color circle broken up into say 8 or so wedges, make each of those a symbol, and then have then tween around with the clock arm, and stack up on each .
and if you use the tint filter, the coder could possible change the color and you would only need 2 layers at the most
I'm interested in perhaps helping you out with some voicework. What are you looking for?
Forget what I said... NitrogenousBeing seems like he has the right idea.

have you played "motherload". I found that game to be really fun, though i am not sure if it's an adventure game.
